The film 'Chhapaak' is based on the life of Laxmi Agarwal. Deepika Padukone is playing the character of Lakshmi Aggarwal. 

Lakshmi was born in a middle-class family in New Delhi, at the age of 15, she was attacked by three men with acid near Tughlaq Road in New Delhi.

To curb acid incidents, Lakshmi launched a Stop Acid Attacks (#StopSaleAcid) campaign banning acid sales, which collected 27,000 signatures on a petition to start.

In 2013, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the petition of Laxmi and Acid Victim Rupa, creating a new set of restrictions on the sale of acid. Under the new rules, acid cannot be sold to anyone under 18 years of age. A photo identification card is also required to be submitted before purchasing acid.

Lakshmi is just 10th pass and she is used to the beauty parlour. But they don't get work because of their face.

Laxmi's word says that there are about 500 acid Victims in India, who get the mercy of people but no money. I received 3 lakh rupees as compensation from the Supreme Court, which was spent in my surgery and pregnancy.

Listening to this story of Laxmi Aggarwal, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar came forward and gave Rs 5 lakh for help so that Laxmi's financial condition could improve somewhat. In 2014, Laxmi received International Woman of Courage award from Michelle Obama, US’ then first lady and was also named NDTV Indian of the Year. In the same year, she founded an NGO, Chhanv Foundation, which aims to help the survivors of acid attacks.
